运动控制主要指，对工作对象的位置、速度及加速度所作的控制。可以是单坐标，即控制对象作直线运动；也可是多坐标的，控制对象的平面、立体，以至于角度变换等运动。有时，还可控制多个对象，而这些对象间的运动可能还要有协调。
